The University Student Commission and our student representatives in ASMSU and the Residence Halls Association have failed us once again. Their recommendation that the forthcoming "independent commission" to investigate the incidents of April 2-3 not have any students on it, nor officials from the city, police department, or the university ("Students, university support review of incidents" SN 4/26) is beyond irresponsible.
This commission must be comprised of individuals who are responsible to our voice. This commission must be made of our student leaders and our city's elected officials. This "independent commission" will only be truly independent if, when its members craft their final report, they keep in mind that their constituents demand nothing short of the truth.
Furthermore, we should not rely upon the university to be our voice. We need not be reminded that the MSU police department had as much of a hand, if not more of one, in the incidents of that night. We should demand that our strongest student leaders serve on this commission, if only they could be found in our student government.
