An accidental trash fire in a North Hubbard Hall dorm room forced the evacuation of hall residents at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, MSU police Sgt. Paul Kuchek said.No one was injured, and there was minimal damage, he said.A student had thrown a cigarette into a trash can, causing the fire, Kuchek said.He said the students initially told police the fire was caused by something in the microwave, because they were afraid they might get in trouble. But when police arrived, there was no microwave in the room. The students told police they had thrown it out but stalled when asked where. Police later discovered the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette.MSU Department of Police and Public Safety will not seek charges in this case, Kuchek said.People were let back inside the hall within 10 to 15 minutes, said East Lansing Fire Department Deputy Chief Terry Lapinski.Five fire vehicles responded to the scene.Accounting sophomore and Hubbard resident Brian Pangburn smelled the smoke but "didn't think anything of it" until the alarm went off.Lauren Phillips
