Double or nothing

February 16, 2005
Education sophomore Erin Milne simultaneously sports a standard skirt and jeans.

Double standards exist in almost all areas of life. For example, how come there aren't as many changing tables in men's bathrooms as there are women's bathrooms? Why is it when guys sleep around, they boast, but if a woman were to do the same, she'd be considered a total skankmeister? Well, SN Style has decided to redefine the double standard and give it a more positive feel.

Take a look in your closets. Everyone should have a skirt, a pair of boots, some jeans - you know, the usuals. Now wear them together. That's right. The standards in your wardrobe, just match 'em up. Now that's a double standard.

1. Skirts over jeans - Style is all about being one of a kind, and this is as unique as it gets. For those that can't wait for warmer weather, it's a good way to show off your wardrobe. For the jeans, go with a standard blue, nothing too dark or faded. It will contrast well with the type of skirt, which can be any color, but preferably not too patterned.

2. Down vests over shirts. The down vest is the latest standard in wardrobes, especially in climates with colder weather. Usually vests are reserved for outdoor atmospheres, but lately they've been spotted in casual ensembles. It might take a little getting used to wearing something heavy indoors, but it's worth it if you want to stand out.

3. Tall boots over jeans - Notice the word "tall"; UGGs or Timberlands might be cozy and weather-resistant, but a nice pair of knee-high boots over a pair of slim-fitting pants makes for a very trendy look. The best look is black boots with blue jeans. Brown ones are OK, but black ones match better with what's on top.
