Teachers deserving of better column

In response to Bradley Wilson's letter on Wednesday defending Bryan Dahl's editorial regarding the public school system in Michigan ("Columnist's writing style is appreciated" SN 12/8), there is good reason to respond to this attack on not only our public schools, but to the wonderful teachers we have in this state.

For as long as I can remember, public school teachers and their unions have been used as a scapegoat for the flaws in a school district. Teachers and their unions have fought for smaller classroom sizes and more funding to give Michigan students the best education possible. Vouchers are an unfair idea, taking money out of school districts who need it the most. If everyone who could afford to remove their students out of a troubled school district, those who could not afford to change schools would be stuck in an even worse situation.

Vouchers would be yet another way to distinguish between the haves and the have-nots. Every child in Michigan deserves to have a good education, and if one feels that they would like to privatize their education should freely enroll in a private school, using their own money. Please do not drag teachers through the mud, they work harder than most people give them credit for.
