Anorexia shouldn't face insensitivity

I'm writing in response to Lindsey K. Anderson's column on jeans sizes and self-esteem ("Jean sizes put weight on esteem" SN 12/1). I agree with most of what she said in her column.

There is certainly an excessive amount of pressure being put on people, especially women, to be a certain size. Magazines, television shows and movies have a huge influence on how men, and people in general, look at women, making it ever more difficult to be acceptable when it comes to appearance.

One thing that bothered me about Anderson's column is her implication that all people who are "toothpicks" are anorexics. Not everyone that is thin is thin because they "became too obsessed with the idea of thinness." Anorexia isn't something people choose to have or like having.

Stop throwing the term "anorexic" around and don't stereotype everyone who is skinny as anorexic because that only invalidates those who do suffer from the disease by playing down its seriousness.
