While I completely agree with your viewpoint on stereotypical mascots (SN 11/8), I believe The State News is ignoring aspects. Mascots that depict minorities are always talked about, however there are others. For example, what about the Minnesota Vikings and Notre Dame Fighting Irish? I highly doubt that every Notre Dame student is of Irish descent.
Also, the Vikings are Scandinavian. Minnesota's logo is stereotyping me. No, I don't wear a horned helmet around campus. I also don't sport a blond Fu Manchu mustache. However, according to the Vikings logo, that's what I look like. Is this ignorance because Scandinavians and Irish have white skin? Are the Native Americans always brought up because they're minorities? I'm not sure about either of these questions.
