Law college to host Proposal 2 discussion

October 18, 2004

To show sensitivity to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, the MSU College of Law is hosting a panel discussion on the impact of Proposal 2 at noon today in Room 343 in the law school.

The proposal would amend Michigan's constitution to recognize marriage and other similar unions as between a man and woman.

The Association of American Law Schools mandates that schools cannot allow interviewers on campus who discriminate, but the U.S. Department of Education requires schools who receive federal funding to allow the military - who will not accept openly gay members - on campus, said Connell Alsup, the MSU College of Law associate dean for Student Affairs and Registrar.

"The AALS recognizes the contradiction, and says law schools must show support for the groups discriminated against," Alsup said.

Speakers, including Michael J. Hodge, a senior principal with Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C., will give short presentations, then open the discussion for questions. Hodge argued the language of the proposal before the Michigan Supreme Court and lost.

"He will provide insight into the proposal as he was truly close to it," Alsup said.

Other speakers include Jay D. Kaplan of the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan and Josephine Ross, a visiting professor to the law school. The panel is open to everyone and will conclude at 1:30.
