In response to the proposed ideas on tailgate regulation ("Officials discuss tailgate regulation" SN 9/23), I have to say that some of the ideas presented were needed long ago to help many of the problems with the Wilson tennis courts tailgate area.
I have worked football parking for the MSU Athletics Department's Ralph Young Fund for three football seasons at donor Lot G across from the tennis court area and I've seen much of what happens. During this time, tailgaters on my lot complained about long lines at the few Porta-Johns as well as their condition from non-stop use. The suggestions to increase the number of portable bathrooms and provide more trash cans and a water station are long overdue and should have been implemented some time ago.
That, however, is not the fault of tailgaters, but of the event planners. Two seasons ago, Wilson, Case and Holden halls closed during tailgates to prevent disruption and damage while people used the restrooms to avoid lines elsewhere. That should have been a red flag to MSU officials that something needed to be done. The other proposals, however, dealing with "restrictions" and "increased enforcement" are shortsighted, costly and deal another blow to Spartan fans.
Does anyone really believe that more police will improve the situation? If further control and restrictions are implemented, the problem will be shifted yet again to another area of campus. First Munn field, now the tennis courts.
Where next?
