In the opinion titled "Out of Bounds" (SN 8/31), you took the Michigan Board of State Canvassers to task for rejecting language used on the petition to ratify the Michigan Marriage Amendment. After agreeing that the Board of State Canvassers is charged with rejecting language that is inadequate in informing the voters of exactly what they are voting for or against, you fail to note how vague and inadequate is the phrase "or similar union for any purpose."
The Board of State Canvassers was correct in rejecting this vague and far reaching language. The proponents of this measure will seek relief from the courts, and the courts will decide how adequate or inadequate the language of this extreme measure is.
