Suspects arraigned for fraternity fight

April 30, 2004

East Lansing police have arrested and arraigned three men in connection with an April 4 assault on Grand River Avenue.

In that assault, which police said started near the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house, 1148 E. Grand River Ave., a group of about a dozen people were seen running across Grand River Avenue and near several businesses.

One fraternity member received a serious head injury from being struck by a rock, police said.

East Lansing police Capt. Juli Liebler said officers interviewed several witnesses, which led them to the arrest of the three men.

Liebler added that the men had been interviewed as witnesses following the assault and gave police false information.

Robert Valdez, 19, from Tecumseh, was charged with assaulting the fraternity member and was released on personal recognizance bond.

He could face up to 10 years in prison.

Tecumseh resident Cole Corey, 19, and Ceresco resident Kyle Sackrider, 20, were charged with filing a false police report of a felony crime, which is punishable by up to four years in prison.

Corey and Sackrider are listed in the student directory as MSU freshmen.

Both Corey and Sackrider were released on bond. Liebler said a warrant has been issued for a fourth suspect who has not been arraigned yet.

Liebler said she doesn't believe any other suspects are involved in the assault.
