The No. 59 MSU men's tennis team lost its third- and fourth-straight Big Ten matches over the weekend. On Saturday, the Spartans fell to No. 1 Illinois, and on Sunday, MSU dropped a match to No. 68 Purdue at the MSU Outdoor Courts.
In Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Fighting Illini, senior Chris Mitchell captured the team's only point by defeating Michael Calkins, 7-6(2), 6-7(11), 1-0(11-9).
The Spartans couldn't recover on Sunday, dropping another 6-1 decision to the Boilermakers.
Mitchell again tallied the team's only point, defeating Purdue's David Robinson, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(9). The win brings the co-captain's total to 21 for the year, improving his Big Ten record to 6-2.
MSU (14-12 overall, 1-7 Big Ten) will travel to Wisconsin and Northwestern this weekend for its final two matches before hosting the Big Ten Championships starting April 29.
