Forum, slam-poet speaker to discuss race, identity issues

April 14, 2004

A conference this weekend is aimed at challenging students to think outside the box when it comes to race.

"Boxed In: Perspectives of Multiracial Communities Conference" will examine the issues that arise for multiracial individuals who face a world of monoracial categories. This student-initiated, student-planned event will feature several workshops addressing issues such as interracial dating, family relationships and portrayals of multiracial people in the media.

The event also will feature keynote speaker Kip Fulbeck, an author, slam poet and filmmaker who is recognized as one of the world's premier artists exploring multiracial identity.

Registration will be held from 9:45 a.m. to 10:20 a.m., with the conference running until 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Gold Rooms A and B of the Union. This event is free to MSU students. Non-MSU students can register for $5.
