Once again, John Bice "Religious affiliation based on parents' faith, geographic regions" (SN 2/26) has used a poorly contrived argument to attack the Christian faith. His assertion that the faith of parents and a person's place of origin are the most important factors in determining religious beliefs is ridiculous.
Neither of my parents are Christians and the same is true of many of my friends. And why is it that, as people get older, the percentage of people who feel that religion is important in their lives increases? Mel Gibson was brought up in a Christian home, but turned away from his beliefs for most of his career. He has returned to his faith, not because of his parents, but because his own personal convictions and experiences.
As far as geography is concerned, Bice is dead wrong. The fastest growing population of Christians in the world is in China, a communist country that for fifty years has tried its best to crush religious beliefs. Millions of Chinese are converting to Christianity every year, even though they face persecution and imprisonment.
Nice try, Bice, but once again you have come up short in your attempt to discredit Christianity.
