Whose idea was it to hang a Big Ten Championship banner before we actually won a championship? Didn't the athletics department learn its lesson from 1998, when we unveiled the championship banner and then went on to lose to Purdue? At least then we had clinched the championship.

Last night, ESPN kept showing the banner and the confetti ready to be unleashed with a Spartans win. These made us look cocky and plain stupid once we lost. Now, if Illinois wins out, we won't get to unveil any banner.

I want whoever's idea it was to put that banner up to have to take it down himself/herself if we don't win the title. It should be covered on national television so we can see their shame. That said, I just hope the current students get to enjoy a championship the way we alumni did just a few years ago. Go State!
