Religious marriages different from legal

I am not sure what all the fuss concerning gays getting married is all about. It appears that many people are confusing the legal concept of marriage with the religious concept. A church's main role in marriage is the performance of a ceremony that follows certain religious traditions.

The state merely issues a license to people who qualify under a legal definition of marriage; there is no religious requirement to marriage. By allowing gay people to marry, this does not mean that a church would be required to marry gay people, only that they would have the same right to marry as everyone else.

Many heterosexual couples choose to get married at the courthouse, and the government should not prevent gay people from doing this. If you have a religious problem with gays, that is up to you.

However, there is a difference between the state's role in marriage and the church's role.
