Munn a roadblock for Icers

For the MSU hockey team (18-5-1 overall, 14-9-1 CCHA), wins at Munn Ice Arena this season have been tough to come by.

Three games remain on the Spartans' home schedule, starting with today's matchup against Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m., and the icers are close to finishing below .500 at home.

Currently, MSU has lost three straight games at home to carry an 8-10-1 record. The last time MSU finished below .500 was the 1980-81 campaign when the team was 7-9-2 at Munn.

As the Spartans get ready to play their last regular-season home game against Michigan on March 5, head coach Rick Comley isn't worried for his team, which could also host first-round playoffs March 12-14.

"I just don't think we were ready yet, good enough at the time," Comley said. "It's the time of year when a lot of players emerge. It took longer than we thought it would've."

For now, MSU's focus is for tonight and Saturday night against Nebraska-Omaha (6-19-5, 4-16-4), which brings an eight-game losing streak.

The Mavericks, tied for last in the CCHA, come to East Lansing led by forward Andrew Wong. In his five career games against MSU, Wong has five points. No other current Mavericks player has recorded a point against the Spartans.

"They're looking to come in here and salvage something and move up a bit in the standings," MSU junior forward Mike Lalonde said.

"Anybody that loses (eight) games in a row wants to get a win. They want to do something, to beat a top team. We can't look at them as being a last-place team."

The two teams face off again tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. on Fox Sports Net Detroit.
