The City of East Lansing was a direct result of Michigan State University. Presently, the permanent residents of the city are attempting to push students north of campus to apartment complexes such as Capstone Commons. The new Campus Village Apartments were "controversial" among residents, and why? Because they were adjacent to campus - in the city of East Lansing ("Controversial complex near completion" SN 2/9).
Does that make any sense to anyone, or am I just totally off base here? Should students not live within walking distance of the university they attend? Students get lazy and complain when they get violations for not shoveling the sidewalks but then don't put any pressure on the city council when new anti-student laws are passed. I commend those who have fought against unfair laws like the noise ordinance passed last year.
There are many other things East Lansing does that are in a very anti-student tone. Refusing to allow bars to expand downtown in a city with a high demand for the establishments, holding renters to an unfair, higher code than permanent residents and the general negative attitude toward students is appalling for a city built upon a university. I urge the students of MSU and The State News to continue to closely watch the city council's actions, and respond in an appropriate manner.
