Deadline set for Ottney case closure

After more than two months of mourning and mystery, officials still are attempting to figure out what caused the seizure-like episode that ended Brian Ottney's life.

Ottney, a former MSU football captain, died at 12:59 a.m. on Sept. 1 in Long Beach, Calif.

Los Angeles County Coroner spokesman David Campbell said that Dec. 15 has been set as a target date for the case to be closed.

"The case still hasn't been finalized," Campbell said. "No results have been released at all."

Long Beach investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor in the death of Ottney, according to police.

"There appeared to have been some alcoholic beverages at his residence," Long Beach police Officer Greg Schirmer said. "It appears to have been an accidental death."
