WEB ONLY: Men's soccer wins over Oakland in third straight double-overtime game

The Spartans must enjoy playing do-or-die soccer games.

The MSU men's soccer team (7-2-2) played in its third straight double overtime game, this one being a 1-0 victory over Oakland University.

Sophomore forward Ryan McMahen scored on a header in the 106th minute giving the Spartans their third straight double-overtime victory. Junior midfielder Jordan Gruber and sophomore midfielder Steve Doster assisted on the goal.

MSU netminder Mike Robinson made eight saves, notching his third shutout on the year.

Oakland (5-2-3) outshot the Spartans 17-12 in the game, but MSU had the 5-1 shot advantage in the overtimes.

"We entered overtime knowing we could win the game," head coach Joe Baum said in a statement. "I sensed that our team had a lot of confidence that comes from our previous experience of winning in overtime.

"Once you do it, you start to believe you can always do it. We did a great job of attacking in both overtime periods, and we were finally able to score the game winner."

The Spartans' next game is a 2:30 p.m. Sunday contest at Old College Field against Michigan.
