WEB ONLY: Iowa defeats men's and women's swimming and diving teams

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams' (both 0-1) hopes to win their season openers were sunk Friday after being defeated by Iowa in Iowa City. The women's team lost to the Hawkeyes 174-120 and the men's team was beaten 180.5-117.5.

The meet was the first dual meet for Spartans interim head coach Matt Gianiodis, who said despite the losses, he was still happy with the way his teams competed.

"It was a good thing for our kids to see how other teams were competing against us and to get them hungry for the next meet," Gianiodis said in a written statement.

The women's team took first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.92) and freshman Eve Brusie won the 50-yard freestyle (23.98) in her first collegiate win.

For the men's team, sophomore Nick Harley took second in the 400 free relay (3:10.75), third in the 200 medley relay (1:33.82) and third in the 50-yard free (21.81). Senior Michael Rigali and Harley earned postmeet team honors.

The men's team will swim at home against Notre Dame on Nov. 7, while the women's team will travel to Ann Arbor to face Michigan and Florida State on Nov. 7.
