Official to discuss destructive beetle

September 4, 2003

Lansing officials will host a free program to discuss the Emerald Ash Borer, an Asian beetle, at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Fenner Nature Center, 2020 E. Mt. Hope Road in Lansing.

The program, presented by Lansing Forestry Manager Paul Dykema, is open to the public and will inform residents how to identify and quarantine the beetle, which has destroyed about 6 million trees in the Detroit area and was spotted in Meridian Township in July.

Dykema also will discuss the Emerald Ash Borer's origin and methods used to fight it.

The Lansing area is part of the quarantined area for the Emerald Ash Borer and residents will learn what the quarantine means to Ingham County and the tree-care industry.
