Fashion trends abound in Grand River stores

September 2, 2003
Grand River Avenue offers several stores for fasion, including Cool Waves, The Gap, Urban Outfitters and Chios. This model's outfit can be found at Cool Waves, 115 E. Grand River Ave.

Many people find themselves wandering aimlessly through malls and stores trying to find clothes and accessories that match their particular fashion personality.

Not everyone wears khaki pants and T-shirts. Some of us need to cater to certain moods we have, wearing all black, all pink, whatever color lets you best express yourself.

Others choose to wear multi-colored, flashy outfits ready to hit the club scene. Then there are some who have to admit even though they made fun of their parents' fashion sense, the '80s are still in.

Whatever category you fall in to, there's no reason to get bent out of shape about finding the right clothes for you. Grand River Avenue has clothing stores to fit anyone's personality.

According to Gaston Garcia, owner of Cool Waves, 115 E. Grand River Ave., he has clothes for all you trendy clubheads.

"We mainly sell clubwear, trendy Miami and Los Angeles fashions," Garcia said. "We recently remodeled, so now we have two atmospheres: Club and more basic, casual clothes."

Cool Waves has been renovating the whole summer. The back room has been opened to fit more clothes and give customers a bigger selection.

"We are not just clubwear. We're bringing in more and more casual, everyday clothes," Garcia said.

Tops range from $15 to $25 and bottoms are $25 to $40. Classy and sexy dresses are also available and can be purchased for less than $80.

Clubwear might not necessarily be your thing, so you might want to swing by Scavenger Hunt, 503 E. Grand River Ave., and dig up some vintage clothing.

"We have a lot of '80s stuff," owner Jason Lantrip said. "Mostly vintage clothes from the '40s through the '80s."

If Scavenger Hunt sounds like the store for you, you'll be happy with the clothing's reasonable prices. There are a number of items you can find for less than $10, with genuine leather jackets and real furs starting at $12 and $50, respectively.

Another store to search on the River is Orchid Lane, 110 Division St. The store is right across from the colorful parking structure, so even though it is not technically on Grand River, it's close enough.

Store employee Katie Lanenga said the store is for those still impressed with hippie-wear.

"We have a lot of hippie clothes, but they're of really good quality," Lananga said. "The owner designs the clothes herself, so we have a lot of handmade stuff."

And don't worry about price, because now through Christmas, the clothing is 50 percent off. This means shirts start as low as $4.

Veterinary technology freshman Abby Mazur said her trends vary day to day.

"My style's different," Mazur said. "I like grunge, I like hippie and I like to dress up."

Las Vegas native Mike Presler was visiting Grand River stores while his sister was in class. He agrees that trends are often changing.

"A lot of people are punk, hip-hop and grunge," Presler said. "I like to go to thrift stores."

So if you want to get dolled up and head out to a club, kick around in vintage clothes or chill in hippie gear, Grand River Avenue shops are going to have whatever you need.
