The East Lansing City Council voted to extend the no-parking ordinance on city streets by one hour at its Tuesday meeting.

The existing no-parking requirement is from 2-5 a.m. The council's vote increases that requirement until 6 a.m.

Mayor Pro Tem Sam Singh was the only council member to disagree with the ordinance change.

City Manager Ted Staton said the time increase came after parking-and code-enforcement officers asked for more time to patrol the city every night.

Currently, residents can park at meters until 2 a.m., but council members could change it to midnight at their Sept. 16 meeting.

The meters at Valley Court Park will allow residents to remain parked until 2 a.m. regardless of the council's decision.

City Attorney Dennis McGinty said more time is needed at Valley Court because there are no nearby parking ramps that would give residents a place to move their car at night.
