ASMSU to recruit more

August 26, 2003

ASMSU is busy making new plans for the fall semester, despite a debilitating computer virus.

The viruses affected computers campus-wide and ASMSU's weren't safe from the worm.

"All of our computers have been hit," Student Assembly Chairperson Missy Kushlak said. "We only have one computer that runs on a different Windows program and was not affected."

Kushlak said computer problems are only a slight setback and, with help from funds from their technology budget, everything should be up and running again in time for the new semester.

MSU's undergraduate student government is actively recruiting new representatives for both the Student and Academic assemblies.

"Our priority is getting representatives back on assembly," said Tom Morse, vice chairperson for internal affairs for the Academic Assembly.

Jared English, Academic Assembly Chairperson, said ASMSU has found other ways to recruit more members.

"We have been passing out fliers around campus at places like (Academic Orientation Program) and Party at the Aud and now we are waiting for people to turn in their applications," English said.

Morse said an outreach committee has also been working on ASMSU recruitment.

"We are considering sponsoring a tailgate for Homecoming, where we would be handing out hot dogs and pop to help get our name out," Morse said.

Several meetings will be held tonight to appoint representatives for the assemblies, said Morse. He hopes to have as many as 10 positions filled by next Tuesday.

The Student Assembly currently has about 10 open positions for new representatives.

"Individual representatives each have their own jobs, but Jared has been thinking outside the box to get everyone to work together as a team," Morse said.

ASMSU is funded through a student-voted tax which helps fund departments including MSU's yearbook, free legal services for students, cheap paper copies and a forum to help address student concerns about the university.

"We want to provide students with a voice and help to correct some of the things that are wrong on campus," English said.

ASMSU officials hope to make several improvements during the transition into the new semester.

"We are working on making ASMSU more campus-based and goal-oriented," English said. "Last year we were more legislature-oriented and some of the campus concerns were overlooked," English said.

Kushlak said relations between students and ASMSU could always be improved.

"In the past, ASMSU has not had a favorable image on campus," Kushlak said.

The first Academic Assembly meeting, on Sept. 2 at 6:30 p.m., will be an introduction and orientation for new representatives.

Morse said ASMSU will possibly address what effects the recent budget cuts have had on education.

Kushlak said the first Student Assembly meeting of the semester, this Thursday at 6:30 p.m., will be a short introduction to the organization and will include a goal-setting presentation to determine what goals each representative has for the semester.

"When I was elected in April, I wanted to hear from the representatives," she said.

"Because hearing from them is like hearing from the students to decide what important issues we need to bring to the table.
