'U' field hockey, men's basketball compete internationally during summer break

Field Hockey

Five members of the MSU field hockey team are in the running for a championship title in the U.S. Field Hockey Association's Summer League.

Seniors Alexandra Kyser and Sophie Rosmalen, juniors Michelle Carstens and Christina Kirkaldy and sophomore Maggie Giddens are all members of the Midwest Cyclones (9-4-1), a 21-member regional team which earned a semifinal berth to a national tournament in Virginia Beach, Va. later this month.

The Cylcones are coached by MSU assistant coach Daan Polders.

On June 21-22, the Spartans made substantial contributions to the Cyclones, scoring a combined six goals to help the team to an 8-0 record. Kirkaldy, a goalie, saw playing time in each game.

Sophomore Michelle Hyunh-Ba is experiencing international competition this summer as a member of the USA Under-20 team. MSU head coach Michelle Madison is an assistant coach on the squad.

Davis scored a team-high 11 points and grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds. Ager tallied 9 points.

The Spartans are two of 15 players vying for a spot on the 12-man squad competing at the 2003 FIBA Men's Junior World Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece. The team will be finalized during the June 24 through July 6 training camp.

Both Davis and Ager started the game for Team USA. Illinois' Dee Brown and Derron Williams and Michigan's Graham Brown were the other starters.

The team will play the Global Games Select team Tuesday night.
