Lansing hurlers hold Dayton hitless in win

April 21, 2003

Lansing - Lansing Lugnuts pitchers threw the club's first no-hitter Sunday in the second home game of the season.

The Lugnuts also had more than enough run support on their way to thumping the Dayton Dragons 15-0 at Oldsmobile Park, 505 E. Michigan Ave.

In addition to the first no-hitter in club history, the Lugnuts hitters put together a 10-run seventh inning - the second-highest one-inning total in club history - and third baseman Donny Hood hit for the cycle in the lopsided victory.

"The effort out there was outstanding, things like that don't happen very often at all," Lansing manager Julio Garcia said. "It was pretty amazing, there's not much else I can say, it was a great game all the way around."

In the fourth inning, second baseman Ryan Theriot crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Milo Salas, and shortstop Buck Coats scored off a Hood double to shallow right-center. And once the ball was rolling, the Dragons (6-10) had no way to stop it.

Dayton right-hander Jan Granado (1-1) was relieved by Edduar Jumelles in the top of the seventh inning, but neither pitcher had much success. They combined to allow nine hits, nine earned runs, two walks and a wild pitch in six innings of work. Granado took the loss for the Dragons.

All told, Lansing (8-4) took 14 trips to the plate in the seventh, stretching its lead to 12-0 before the inning's end.

Many Lugnuts boosted their stats during the game, but Hood was definitely the most impressive, going 4-for-5 with a walk and five RBIs. Hood put the last runs on the board with a 3-run dinger over the wall in center field.

"It felt really good coming back these last few games," said Hood, who sat out the first three games of the year with a shoulder injury. "And it's great to start hitting the ball like that
