April album wrap-up: Lizzie West

April 21, 2003

A bit further from the pop rock, girl-empowerment theme, Lizzie West triggers only the memory of 10,000 Maniacs' Natalie Merchant - almost exactly. Although she doesn't look the part, she sure sounds it. Every cut on the 13-track album is a haunting image of Merchant. The themes of love are the same, the guitar work and vocals again are eerie.

Minor differences (there are some) include the small whispers on "Miss You Baby," the rough sounds of "Jenny" and the mysterious lyrics of "Doctor" with its chorus of, "You better get yourself to the doctor/Your head just ain't on right." The album has definite folk influences and is free on certain tracks to just jam. At least West writes her own songs - "crew" excluded.
