Hill, Anderson snag team MVP accolades

March 18, 2003

Sophomore guard Chris Hill might need to devote an entire room to house the individual awards he's piled up this season.

Monday, Hill and sophomore forward/guard Alan Anderson were co-recipients of the MSU men's basketball team MVP award.

The award, voted on by members of the team, was presented at the Spartans' annual Basketball Bust, an awards dinner to recognize team achievement.

Hill also nabbed MVP honors from MSU's media and the team's Scholar-Athlete Award.

Senior forward Aloysius Anagonye won the Chairman of the Boards Award for leading the team in rebounds (166) and the Antonio Smith Glue and Guts award for toughness.

Anagonye has won the Glue and Guts award - named in honor of Smith, an original Flintstone - the past three seasons.

Sophomore guard Kelvin Torbert was named the Best Defensive Player and Most Improved Player.

Junior center Jason Andreas won the Unsung Player Award, and junior forward Adam Wolfe earned the Inspirational Player Award for his comeback from a severe hamstring injury.

Izzo on Iraq

Izzo waxed diplomatic Monday, addressing the possibility of war with Iraq coinciding with this weekend's first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

"It just concerned me that there are a lot bigger things than this," he said of basketball in the scope of world politics. "It looks like things could happen just when the weekend starts.

"I don't know how you plan on something like that - brings a reality to the game a little bit."

Should war with Iraq break during the tournament, tournament-broadcaster CBS has said basketball will take a back seat to war coverage and be aired on cable networks in lieu of a national broadcast.

Mr. Basketball

With this year's tournament bid, MSU has now made the NCAA Tournament six straight seasons. But one streak was snapped Monday.

Dion Harris of Detroit's Redford was named Michigan's Mr. Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. The announcement snaps a four-year streak of Michigan Mr. Basketball winners committing to play at MSU.

Harris will don maize and blue at Michigan next season.

Former swingman Jason Richardson garnered the award in 1999; former guard Marcus Taylor won in 2000; Torbert won in 2001; and freshman center Paul Davis captured the honor in 2002.

MSU recruits Brandon Cotton, a guard from Detroit DePorres, and Drew Naymick, a forward/center from North Muskegeon came in second and third, respectively, in the voting.
