Greek Week kicks off Sunday to raise money for charity bill

March 28, 2003

It's time to break out the water bottles, sweatsuits and gym shoes.

Greek Week, which kicks off Sunday, is a week of fund-raising events performed by the Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils benefiting several charities.

Larry Wisne, director of Greek Week, wanted to make it clear everyone in the community - not just greeks - is invited to participate.

"We support a lot of charities with our donations," Wisne said. "It puts (greeks) in a good light with not only the campus, but with the community."

Suzie Luplow, vice president of external relations for Panhellenic Council, said the greeks haven't set a fund-raising goal yet, but hope to raise a lot of money.

"As young adults, it's important to give back to the community," Luplow said.

On Sunday morning, greeks will gather on the field behind Beaner's Gourmet Coffee, 270 W. Grand River Ave., for relay races and a kickball tournament. As each team advances, more money is raised.

Later that afternoon, they will head over to Munn Field for a few games of football, where the same rules are followed.

A choreographed dance competition at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Auditorium will feature six members of each fraternity and sorority. Admission to the event is $3 per person.

"We're hoping to raise over $20,000 through Special Olympics," Luplow said, referring to Thursday's event.

At IM Sports-West, greeks will host several athletes and volunteers in the games. In the past, the greeks have raised upward of $60,000 for Special Olympics.

The greeks will continue to be in motion at Relay for Life from April 4 and 5 at Jenison Field House.

Proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society.

The week wraps up with three events in the Auditorium: Battle of the Bands on April 7, a forum on drunken driving on April 9, and a parents' reception April 12.

Wisne said although the goal is to raise money, the groups also hope to enjoy their time together.

"We want to make this a fun experience," he said. "When they become involved, they'll have fun and realize what they're doing is very helpful for the community."
