About 15 people, including five East Lansing police officers, met Tuesday night at Bailey Community Center, 300 Bailey St., to discuss campus and city safety.Residents and police expressed concern about several assaults in the city and shared their ideas to tighten security, including installing more deadbolt or keypad locks in doors and simply locking doors. Several East Lansing police detectives said nearly all assaults in the city occur in homes with unlocked doors and are committed by acquaintances. A 21-year-old female student reported her wallet and its contents stolen from IM Sports-West on Monday, MSU police Lt. John McCandless said.She left her belongings in an unlocked locker between 6:15-6:45 p.m. When she returned after working out, all her items were on a nearby bench and the wallet was missing from her coat pocket. The loss is valued at $310 and police have no suspects. A 20-year-old male student reported a $250 cell phone stolen from IM Sports-East Monday, McCandless said.The phone was taken from his coat pocket while he was playing basketball between 2:30-3:30 p.m. Police have no suspects. A 20-year-old male student reported his cell phone and cash stolen from the first floor men's locker room in Jenison Field House on Monday, McCandless said.Between 12:40-2:10 p.m., the student left his cell phone and $40 cash in an unlocked locker. When he returned from class the items, valued at $140, were missing. Police have no suspects. An 18-year-old student reported an unknown person stole one of her checks from her Hubbard Hall room, McCandless said. Between Feb. 4 and Feb. 14, the check was taken and it was attempted to be cashed at a bank in Okemos. There is a suspect and police are investigating. A 40-year-old male MSU employee reported a television stolen from Landon Hall's east laundry room, McCandless said.The $300 television was taken between noon Sunday and 7:30 a.m. Monday. Police have no suspects.
