Spring rush to begin for some greeks

January 10, 2003

Spring recruitment for Interfraternity Council fraternities and Panhellenic Council sororities kicks off Monday with an open house in the Union from 4-8 p.m.

Interfraternity Council President Anthony Morabito says a joint council open house is a first for this semester.

"Normally, the guys have a night in the Union, and the girls go and do their own thing," Morabito said.

Allison Amrine, Panhellenic Council vice president of recruitment, said meet-and-greet sessions are beneficial to those interested.

"All the sororities are coming out," she said. "The girls are there to introduce themselves and answer any questions. It's worked really well in the past."

This semester, both councils are trying to have more organized processes for spring recruitment. Amrine said fall recruitment is usually more formal than in the spring, and they are looking to change the guidelines of the latter.

"I'm going to be working with individual recruitment officers, not just myself handling recruitment," Amrine said. "This year, it's going to be more structured and more organized."

From 5-10 p.m. on Jan. 21-23, students interested in Panhellenic Council sororities can visit their houses. Students can visit Interfraternity Council fraternity houses from 6-10 p.m. on Jan. 27-30.

Interfraternity Council Vice President of Recruitment Ryan Kohlmann said the number of recruits is usually the same between semesters but the groups are always striving to improve each semester.

"We're looking to get as many people involved as we can and improve the numbers," Kohlmann said.

Greek Life adviser Amy Radford said the two councils are trying to make efforts more consistent.

"It's really going to promote all the different chapters and organizations," Radford said. "It's a positive step in a positive direction."
