Smith gets 2 more commitments

January 28, 2003

MSU loaded up its offense with two more verbal commitments this weekend.

Tecumseh (Mich.) High all-purpose back Cole Corey and Palm Beach (Fla.) High wide receiver Irving Campbell have both said "Yes" to MSU.

Corey is 5-foot-11, 185 pounds and has been clocked at 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

"I'd like to get the ball in my hands," Corey said. "But I just want to play. I might start out as a running back. But I know that size is a big matter and they might try me at defensive back."

Tecumseh head football coach Randy Hutchison said Corey was committed to Western Michigan, but rescinded after MSU hired head football coach John L. Smith.

Hutchison said MSU was a good fit academically, socially and athletically for him.

"He kind of had MSU in the back of his mind all along," Hutchison said. "The chance to play in the Big Ten has always been a dream of his."

Corey said he's excited about his career with Smith at the helm.

"I really like Coach Smith," he said. "He interacts well with the players, and I think he could turn things around at MSU."

Corey's was named to The Ann Arbor News' 1st Team All-League and 1st Team All-Ann Arbor Area.

Collegiate coaches are not allowed to comment on recruits until they sign a National Letter of Intent. Signing day is Feb. 5.

Campbell is listed at 6-foot, 175 pounds, and Palm Beach head football coach Ray Berger said Smith was a big part of Campbell's decision, too.

"He loved the atmosphere and coach Smith," Berger said. "He described him as being real. He just felt at ease with him."

Campbell was named to the Florida Class 6-A All-Conference Team and Outback Steakhouse Treasure Coast All-Star Football Game.

"He's the real deal," said Larry Blustein, publisher of the online recruiting magazine FloridaKids.net. "He has an opportunity to come in and get some playing time."

Blustein said Campbell runs a 4.45 40-yard dash and had 33 catches for 675 yards last season. He added Campbell also was looking at Minnesota.

MSU coaches are also going after Jason Goodman of Montana. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end, arrived home Monday from his visit to MSU.

Goodman is listed as the No. 57 tight end in the nation, according to the online recruiting magazine Rivals100.com.

"I'm still considering MSU, Washington, Montana, Wyoming," Goodman said. "MSU was real nice. I was treated well when I visited."

Goodman, a student at C.M. Russell High in Great Falls, said his decision will likely come later this week.
