Fraternities, 'frats' two different things

With Recruitment Week starting up, I think everyone should know the truth about social fraternities.

First of all, fraternities are brotherhoods (sometimes sisterhoods) whose members believe in a common goal. These common beliefs/goals were created at the founding of the individual fraternities and with this common goal, we live our lives and pledge our honor. To sum it all up, that is what a fraternity is.

The thing is that a fraternity is not is a "frat." This word is used to associate us with the stereotype of fraternities. A stereotype which hinders and oppresses us on college campuses. I can proudly say my fraternity is not a "frat," but unfortunately I cannot always say the same of others on campus.

I know to others the idea of committing or thinking of associating with a fraternity is a frightening thing and they reject it. A fraternity is like any other club or organization on campus; we have dues that allow for us to go on trips, retreats and to keep us connected to our other chapters through our (inter)national organizations.

This is what a fraternity is on the surface. Within the individual houses, there are brotherhoods and memories that will last a lifetime. I encourage everyone to go out to rush and see for yourself. It is a good experience for people to at least see what a fraternity can offer you.

Keep an open mind.
