Football prospects on rise; Woodley keeps quiet

January 31, 2003

MSU's recruiting class doubled throughout the past week, jumping from seven verbal commitments to 14. And one analyst said MSU head football coach John L. Smith and his staff are doing an excellent job given the circumstances.

"I've think they've done as well as they could for not having a recruiting weekend until January," ESPN.com recruiting analyst Tom Lemming said. "They're keeping their heads above water."

Lemming said the true test for Smith and his staff will come next year, when they get a chance to recruit for a whole year. Smith's hiring was announced Dec. 19. Since then, he has recruited three nationally ranked players, according to online recruiting magazine Rivals100.com.

"The fans all want to see big names, but they won't come until next year," Lemming said.

But two big names are still on MSU's radar screen: Saginaw High's LaMarr Woodley and Jerome Jackson. Woodley is ranked by Rivals100.com as the No. 3 linebacker in the nation and Jackson is ranked the No. 15 running back.

Since both are good friends, they will likely go to the same school, Lemming said.

Woodley said he is looking at Southern Cal, Michigan and Michigan State and will not make an announcement until signing day. He said he likes Smith and his track record.

"He's a pretty funny coach," Woodley said. "A lot of programs he went to, he turned around."

Ultimately, Woodley said his decision will come down to where he feels the most comfortable. Lemming said he believes Woodley is leaning toward U-M, which could mean two big losses for MSU - if Jackson joins him.

Nevertheless, he added MSU's recruiting class should be fine for next season.

And the good news keeps coming for MSU. Mike Gyetvai from Windsor, Ontario, has also committed to MSU. The offensive lineman's brother, Dan Gyetvai, said he committed Wednesday.

Collegiate coaches are not allowed to comment on recruits until they sign National Letters of Intent. Signing day is Feb. 5.
