Goliaths of 2002 no match for Davids, monkey

Pass that gourmet mustard, relish and ketchup.

Please.

The year 2002 was the year of the underdog. And you thought it was the year of the horse.

Nope, the underdogs bit back, bite by bite.

The Davids triumphed in almost every contest from a professional football team that entered the field of battle together without individual recognition to a bunch of low-budget, nameless ballplayers who played for a city that doesn't support them under an ownership that doesn't want them.

The Goliaths were rocked, literally.

The kick heard around the world

A 48-yard field goal from the foot of New England Patriots' place-kicker Adam Vinatieri sailed through the uprights in Superbowl XXXVI, sending the smart-man's-money St. Louis Rams reeling from an improbable season performed by the Patriots.

The Pats had been the butt of jokes Sunday after Sunday. But the starry-eyed squad, laughed last
