SPORTS UPDATE: Icers skate away with victory, barely

October 26, 2002

The Spartan hockey team flirted with disaster, but came out on top of Lake Superior State on Friday night at Munn Ice Arena.

MSU dominated most of the game - taking a 2-0 lead into the final two minutes of the third period - but a quick Laker barrage tied the game 2-2 with 56 seconds remaining.

As it turned out, the Lakers’ gallant comeback merely set the stage for a dramatic victory for the Spartans (4-2 overall, 3-1 CCHA).

Sophomore left wing Brock Radunske netted a goal with 2.7 seconds left in the third period to win it for the 12th-ranked Spartans. Junior defenseman Joe Markusen hit Radunske at the side of the crease with a long pass, and Radunske easily guided the puck past Laker goaltender Matt Violin for his first goal of the season.

The 6,547 fans at Munn and the Spartan bench both erupted in approval of the 3-2 victory, moments after watching MSU’s seemingly safe lead erode.

Laker left wing Jon Booras scored the first two goals of his career 69 seconds apart to tie the game 2-2 late in the third. The tallies - scored at 17:55 and 19:04 - were almost carbon copies of each other.

Both times, Lake Superior right wing Aaron Davis shot wide of sophomore goalie Matt Migliaccio, but Booras was there to tip the puck in.

The Lakers had a man-advantage for both goals - the first time because senior left wing Brian Maloney was in the penalty box for roughing, and the second time because Laker head coach Frank Anzalone pulled Violin for an extra attacker.

Migliaccio, whose shutout streak was snapped at 130:30 by the first goal, made 16 saves for the Spartans.

MSU beat the Lakers, 7-0, in Thursday’s series-opener. Lake Superior is now 3-3, 0-2.

Senior defenseman Brad Fast scored the only goal in a tight-checking first period. The Spartans’ leading scorer notched his sixth goal of the season with a one-time slap shot from the point on a power play with 42.5 seconds left in the period.

But aside from Fast’s goal, the period was mostly devoid of chances for both teams. MSU outshot the Lakers, 7-2, in the first, but neither Migliaccio nor Violin was really challenged.

The second period featured more rushes for both squads, but neither side mustered a goal.

MSU freshman left wing David Booth rang a backhand shot off the crossbar at the beginning of the frame, and Violin made dazzling glove saves on both Radunske and sophomore forward Mike Lalonde.

The Spartans also wasted a one-minute, 20-second 5-on-3 advantage in the second.

Migliaccio didn’t have as much work as Violin, but he did make a solid save on Laker defenseman Kory Scoran’s power-play slap shot near the end of the period.

Sophomore forward Lee Falardeau upped MSU’s lead to 2-0 with a short-handed goal 7:49 into the third period.

After a faceoff win, Fast wristed a long shot that hit traffic in front of Violin. An opportunistic Falardeau was right there to lift the puck into the net for his first goal of the season.

MSU outshot Lake Superior 40-18 for the game. The Spartans went 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Lakers went 1-for-4. The Spartans now have almost two weeks off before hosting Niagara on Nov. 8-9.

Personnel: For the second straight game, sophomore left wing Kevin Estrada was a healthy scratch Friday. The 5-foot-11, 188-pounder was highly regarded coming out of the British Columbia Junior Hockey League, but he has struggled to find his niche in college hockey.

Also Friday, MSU head coach Rick Comley put freshman defenseman Evan Shaw back in the lineup, replacing freshman right wing Chad Hontvet.

Freshman defenseman Jared Nightingale moved to right wing to balance the lines.
