I almost didnt respond to Nathan Tops letter to the editor and Carrie Hoovers column regarding black groups on campus (Columnist brave to make honest points SN 10/28 and Separation doesnt promote unity SN 10/25).
I was having a peaceful day and did not want to have the burden of thinking my white brothers and sisters are unhappy with support systems for people of color.
I do not understand how some whites pretend as if there is no racism and that our experiences do not shape who we are.
If it were not for groups like black caucus, some black students might feel extremely isolated or unwanted after reading such ignorance and hatred.
There is no need for a group such as a white caucus because MSU itself, and ultimately the United States, is a white caucus.
We are in the middle of times where innocent people are dying left and right while people like Top and Hoover want to debate an element of unity, support and love for people of color on a divided campus.
I used to try my hardest to come down on letters and columns published in The State News from those who have a problem with my brown skin. But Im tired.
Even Martin Luther King Jr. got discouraged.
I can only hope that people like Top and Hoover take a moment and focus on why these groups are needed.
They are needed because of the foolishness that has taken over this country. This is why people lost their lives on Sept. 11.
People are tired. What happened on Sept. 11 was definitely wrong, but it was a result of people acting out of anger.
I ask that people try and be more forgiving and understanding.
