Group to host town hall forum

October 8, 2002

ASMSU, MSU’s undergraduate student government, will be hosting a town hall forum at the Wonder Hall Kiva to debate the topic of Proposal 4 at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sen. John “Joe” Schwartz, R-Battle Creek, and the Citizens for a Healthy Michigan will appear at the debate, with Rick Pluta from WKAR mediating the event.

The proposal will take 90 percent of Michigan’s tobacco settlement funding and direct it toward health-care programs. That money would otherwise have been directed to the Michigan Merit Award program, which awards $2,500 scholarships to qualifying students for their college education. The money also will take some funding away from the Life Sciences Corridor, a joint program bringing educational institutions in the state together to work on bettering the science education.

The goal is to give MSU students and the general public a balanced view of both sides of the argument to make an educated choice on which side they want to take in the general election Nov. 5.

The forum is free to everyone, and there will be a time set to pose questions to the debaters.
