ASMSU committee gives code revisions to Academic Assembly to avoid confusion

October 3, 2002

A committee to fix up the ASMSU Academic Assembly’s Code of Operations introduced its revisions to the assembly Tuesday night.

The Code Revision Committee was formed in early September to revise the assembly’s code. Assembly members said the code was outdated and needed improvements.

The committee met its Oct. 1 deadline to present the changes to the undergraduate student government assembly. However, no actions were taken because of a rule giving members a week to review the changes.

The revisions will be reintroduced at the assembly’s next Tuesday meeting, after assembly members have a chance to review the changes. If passed, the new code will take effect on Nov. 1.

Adam Raezler, James Madison representative for the Academic Assembly and chairman of the Code Revision Committee, said the old code had several grammatical errors and had structural changes that needed to be fixed.

“The content of the (new) code is very good,” he said. “The code committee spent a lot of time on it and they did a really great job. I don’t foresee the assembly changing too much of the content.”

One change introduced to the code was the addition of job descriptions, committee member Colleen Card said.

“It kind of creates another check to make sure no one’s slacking off,” said Card, who is also the College of Social Science representative.

The committee presented seven titles of revised code to the assembly, which added nine pages, bringing the proposed document to 25 pages, Card said.

“The old code was in pretty good shape, but there were parts that weren’t really that clear,” she said. “The end product clears up a lot of things.”

There hasn’t been a committee to revise the code before, but it was needed, said Academic Assembly Chairperson Matt Clayson.

Card said changes had not been made before because assembly members in the past didn’t think it was worth the time to revise it.

“I think people were just satisfied with it,” she said. “It was good to have a say,” Card said. “But I’m not sure it’s worth the hassle of the other assembly members second-guessing us.”

But Raezler said he thinks setting up the committee is not worth it.

“I won’t sit on a committee like this for ASMSU again,” he said.

“The assembly didn’t feel too grateful.”
