Voter registration deadline Monday

July 3, 2002

Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the Aug. 6 primary election.

Michigan residents can register to vote at their city or township clerk office, any Secretary of State branch office or by mail with a voter registration form.

Registration forms are at county, township and city clerk offices. They also can be printed from the Secretary of State Web site, www.michigan.gov/sos.

To register, one must be at least 18 by election day, a U.S. citizen, a resident of Michigan and the city or township in which they are applying to vote.

If a Michigan resident registers to vote under an address different from their driver’s license, the license address must be changed. Changes of address can be completed at a Secretary of State branch office or by mail.

To get a ballot by mail, residents need to submit a request to their city or township clerk no later than 2 p.m. Aug. 3. Absentee ballots are also available at city or township clerk offices.

Residents are eligible to vote by absentee ballot if they expect to be away on election day, are age 60 or older, are in jail awaiting trial or arraignment, cannot attend polls for religious reasons or are physically unable to.
