Spartan qualifies for U.S. Amateur

July 29, 2002

MSU senior Eric Jorgensen earned medalist honors at Friday’s U.S. Amateur Open sectional qualifier Friday with a 36-hole score of 137. With this win, Jorgensen is automatically qualified for next month’s national championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills.

Jorgensen score was 7-under-par at The Country Club of Boyne in Harbor Springs.

Fellow MSU golfer Casey Lubahn, a junior, placed third after a 36-hole score of 151 in Wednesday’s sectional at Cedar Chase Golf Club in Cedar Springs. Lubahn finished two strokes behind Stephen Polanski of Livonia and Russ Cunningham of DeWitt, but earned a place on the U.S. Amateur Open alternates list.

“I didn’t play nearly as well as I could have,” he said. “But I fought hard to at least be there at the end.

“(The Amateur Open) is before school starts, so I’ll be ready to focus on golf and give it a good shot.”

Junior J.J. Beckstrom failed to qualify for the Amateur Open after firing a 19-over-par 163 in Harbor Springs.

Two more events will finish sectionals today. Past winners of the U.S. Amateur Open include Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
