Engler denies funding to change license shape

July 31, 2002

Gov. John Engler recently vetoed $1 million of funding for the bill to change driver’s license forms for those under 21-years-of-age.

The new licenses would have been in a vertical rectangular shape, instead of the familiar horizontal shape so minors’ IDs might be more easily spotted. The dates when the person turns 18 and 21 will be listed easily on the ID so fewer mistakes will be made.

Engler wanted to find a cheaper way to get the IDs made, spokesman Matt Resch said. The driver’s license contract the state holds will be up soon and the conversion from horizontal to vertical licenses can be fit into it, Resch said.
