Downtown eatery starts outside dining

Cosí, 301 E. Grand River Ave., will start offering outdoor seating this week.

The restaurant will have 12 outdoor seats at six tables on M.A.C. Avenue on a trial basis approved by the city. No alcohol will be served outdoors.

The East Lansing City Council approved the proposal, which runs until Oct. 1, by a vote of 3-1 on Tuesday. Council member Bev Baten voted against the plan.

“I like the idea of outdoor dining,” Baten said. “But I think we’re causing conflict for pedestrians out there.”

Council member Vic Loomis agreed in part with Baten, but still voted in favor of the outdoor seating.

“I’d like to see more outdoor dining,” Loomis said. “I think we’ll have a lot of conflict but that’s their challenge.”
