After extended road trip, Lugnuts prepared for 12-game homestand

May 23, 2002

After a four-game road series against the Kane County Cougars, the Lansing Lugnuts will return home for 12 consecutive contests.

The Lugnuts took two of the first three games of the series from the Cougars before falling 5-4 Tuesday at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, Ill. Before the loss, the Lugnuts had been on a season-best five-game winning streak.

The Lugnuts took game two 2-1 in 12 innings Monday behind a 2-for-5 performance by left fielder Antoine Cameron. Cameron led off the second and 12th innings - the only innings the Lugnuts scored - with doubles and went on to score both of Lansing’s runs.

After trailing 3-1 through three innings in game one, the Lugnuts scored the next eight runs to score a 9-4 victory Sunday.

Results from game four were not available at the time of press.

Lansing manager Julio Garcia said the home stretch will be beneficial because his staff will have more time to work with players.

“We will be able to get some work done being at home,” Garcia said. “We haven’t been able to work too much on our skills because we haven’t had that many games at home.”

The Lugnuts have played 20 of their last 28 games on the road. In those road games, Lansing is 6-13.

“We haven’t played at home that much,” Garcia said. “It’ll be good playing in front of the home crowd.”

The Lugnuts have posted a 12-6 record in Oldsmobile Park, 505 E. Michigan Ave., this season. Looking to start the homestand with a positive spin will be right-hander Sergio Mitre. Mitre has a 2-5 record with a 4.23 ERA.

Look for designated hitter Brad Bouras to continue the offensive production during the upcoming homestand. Bouras leads the team with a .303 batting average and five home runs.

The Lugnuts host three different opponents for four-game series during the homestand. The first of those teams is the Cedar Rapids Kernels, followed by the Beloit Snappers and ending with the Peoria Chiefs.

The Lugnuts will start the homestand against the Kernels at 6:05 p.m. Friday at Oldsmobile.
