5 Spartans to compete in U.S. Womens Open qualifier

Women’s golf coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll and four women’s golfers have a date set with the U.S. Women’s Open sectional qualifier.

Senior Emily Bastel, redshirt sophomore Allison Fouch and Slobodnik-Stoll will participate in a sectional qualifier in North Carolina on June 5.

Bastel was exempt from the local qualifying round, while Fouch and Slobodnik-Stoll moved on after posting local qualifier scores of 79 and 78, respectively. The qualifier took place at Radrick Farms Golf Club in Ann Arbor.

Senior Stacy Snider and sophomore Sarah Martin are en route for a qualifier in Illinois on June 3 after carding an 80 and 82 in local qualifier, respectively.

“It feels good,” Snider said. “I actually didn’t expect to get in.”

Snider, playing in her first sectional qualifier, said her score was high, but so were the other scores at the local qualifier.

“I’m excited,” she said. “I’ve never played (in) it.”

Snider said staying patient and hitting as many fairways and greens will be the key to success. But she isn’t setting her sights too high.

“It’s a learning experience,” she said.

The five Spartans are hoping to be one of 150 participants at the 2002 U.S. Women’s Open at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan. from July 4-7.
