SATURDAY UPDATE: Student suffers injuries in campus crash; traffic shut down for 2 hours

April 13, 2002
Fire officials work to clean up an accident Saturday afternoon. Police said a Ford Escort and Honda Accord collided, shutting down traffic on West Circle Drive near the Main Library for about two hours. A female MSU student, who was driving the Escort, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital.

An MSU student was injured in a car accident today that shut down the stretch of West Circle Drive near the Main Library for the better part of two hours.

The student was transported to Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital, where she’s being treated for minor injuries, East Lansing fire officials said.

The accident took place about 2 p.m., when the student’s car, a Ford Escort, collided with a Honda Accord near the entrance to the library. The female student’s vehicle flipped, and sustained extensive damage.

The student was the only person riding in the overturned car. The Accord, which had four occupants, suffered minor damage.

Police are investigating the accident and no fault has been determined, MSU police Sgt. Randy Holton said. Police are unsure how fast each vehicle was traveling, but both were traveling east on West Circle.

Eyewitness Amelia Prado, a second-year medical student, said she saw the Honda switch lanes and strike the Escort, which flipped over twice before hitting the curb and coming to rest.

Cars traveling down West Circle while cleanup was ongoing were forced to turn around on the one-way street, reversing the flow of traffic and causing a logjam on one of campus’ busiest stretches.
