U-M graduate union approves contract

March 18, 2002

Members of the University of Michigan’s Graduate Employees Organization voted Sunday to ratify a new contract with the school.

The two sides agreed on child care, health benefits and wages last week. The graduate organization had announced it would vote whether to permanently strike a few weeks ago.

“There’s always some give and take,” said Alyssa Picard, chief negotiator for the organization. “In the end, we took a bit of a hit on the wages to achieve the child care aspects.”

She said for each child, members will receive a grant of $1,700, up from $1,000.

Picard said members placed more than 200 votes to ratify against six to strike.

She said she thinks U-M went along with the new contract because the union was threatening to strike. Both sides should sign the contract, the union’s 12th, in about a month.

Last Monday, some undergraduate students didn’t go to class to support MSU’s Graduate Employees Union.

Jessica Goodkind, the union’s president, said members were happy about the U-M settlement.

“I am really excited and I am not surprised because I think that they showed the university they were serious and these were important issues to them and they sat down and got it down,” she said.

Goodkind said MSU and the graduate union reached a tentative agreement on the training of teaching assistants Thursday.
