Man suspected of scamming for donations

March 21, 2002

A 32-year-old Lansing man was arrested Monday night as he is suspected of scamming money from the American Red Cross and other charities after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Lansing police Lt. Steve Mitchell said.

The New York City Police Department issued a three-count warrant for Daniel Djoro, who is suspected of fraudulently receiving $280,000 from the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and charities. Djoro forged documents to receive a false driver’s license and Social Security card for a brother who didn’t exist.

Djoro then went to New York, where he told authorities his brother had died in the World Trade Center attacks while he was there applying for a job. He received a death certificate for his brother after forging a false affidavit, Mitchell said.

New York City police called Lansing police Detective Steve Jex to aid in the investigation. Jex told New York police that Djoro did not have a brother. Djoro is lodged at the Ingham County Jail. Detectives from New York will pick him up this week to face charges in New York.
