Group holds conference for biracial, bisexual students

March 22, 2002

A conference titled “The Mixed Experience” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Multicultural Center in the Union basement. It is sponsored by Hapa Asian Pacific Alliance on campus.

The conference focuses on helping biracial and bisexual students.

Speakers include biracial staff on campus, including professionals from the Office of Racial Ethnic Student Affairs, the MSU Counseling Center and the Multicultural Center.

“There aren’t very many multiracial groups, especially in the local area. They’re trying to build a foundation for this issue,” said Kevin Nadal, adviser for the conference and an academic guidance counselor at the Office of Supportive Services.

“It’s a great opportunity to see older professionals who are biracial, to know that it is OK and that you can be biracial and have your own identity. You’re solid. You’re normal,” Nadal said.

Nadal said the conference will have interactive workshops and will be an excellent opportunity for biracial students to feel a sense of belonging.
