Pool shows potential, beauty of IM facility

February 4, 2002
James Perra, ASMSU chairperson of the intramural facilities improvement committee, stands on a balcony overlooking a pool in IM Sports-Circle. The area is no longer in use because the university could not afford to repair it in the early 1980s. Perra?s committee wants to renovate the facility.

For about 20 years, a pool in IM Sports-Circle has been collecting dust and debris.

James Perra, ASMSU chairperson of the intramural facility improvement committee, said the 80-year-old pool represents the potential of all the intramural facilities on campus.

For three years the undergraduate student government has been trying to pave the way for a campuswide intramural renovation project.

“The pool is just gorgeous,” Perra said.

The historical arena features a spiral staircase that leads up to a balcony lined with black railing, and is accented by arched windows.

Perra said he has a personal desire to restore the pool area that was built around 1916.

“I would like to expand the balcony area out and put tables and chairs up there,” Perra said. “I would like to make the pool handicap accessible.”

IM Sports-Circle was the first of MSU‘s recreational facilities. Demonstration Hall followed in 1928, IM Sports-West in 1959 and IM Sports-East, the most modern of MSU‘s facilities, in 1989.

Last fall, the intramural renovation process became a collaborative effort when university officials took the initiative to form the improvement committee.

The committee, consisting of university administrators and ASMSU members, recognized improved intramural facilities would benefit students.

Committee members are reviewing whether it would be beneficial to build new facilities or renovate existing ones.

Perra said he would like to renovate and preserve the old intramural buildings. He also would like to see sanitation issues addressed at all the buildings.

“You can’t go into a locker room without worrying about getting a tetanus shot,” Perra said. “It’s really important to have good facilities for both mental and physical reasons.”

Condition surveys of the buildings and equipment are being recorded so renovation decisions can be prioritized and categorized, officials said. An ASMSU phone survey of about 700 students beginning next week will include questions about the facilities.

The funding for the renovation process has not been allocated, but ASMSU committee member David Nyberg said it would be ideal to start the renovation process in the fall.

“The main idea is to have a central gathering place for all students,” Nyberg said. “Somewhere big enough for someone to go wow.”

“I want to see something to boost student morale.”

Dan Bollman, administration committee member, said they are scheduled to present the project costs and plans to university administrators at the beginning of May.

Bollman said administrators will review the proposal and decide how to fund the project.

“I would like to bring the facilities up to a level that’s acceptable to students,” Bollman said.
